Getting Around 30A Without a Car: Golf Carts, Bikes, and the Timpoochee Trail

Guests arrive on 30A with a car and, within a day, most of them stop using it. Scenic Highway 30A is a two-lane road through a string of beach towns, parking in the town centers fills early, and the whole corridor is threaded with a paved bike path. The week gets better the moment you leave the keys on the counter.

Here is how people actually move around 30A, what is and is not allowed on golf carts and bikes, and the mistakes that turn a fun perk into an expensive one.

The Timpoochee Trail

The Timpoochee Trail is a paved path that runs the length of 30A, roughly nineteen miles from Dune Allen in the west to Inlet Beach in the east. It links every town, passes coastal dune lakes and state park land, and is the reason a family can ride from a rental in Seagrove to dinner in Seaside without touching the road. It is shared by walkers, runners, and riders, so it is a slow-and-courteous path rather than a training route.

Golf Carts and Low-Speed Vehicles

Two different vehicles get called golf carts on 30A. A standard golf cart is not street legal and may only be used inside the community where the home sits. A low-speed vehicle, or LSV, is a street-legal cart with lights, seat belts, and a plate; it may be driven on roads posted at 35 mph or less, which covers most of 30A itself, but never on Highway 98, and never on the beach, dunes, trails, bike paths, or sidewalks.

Who may drive is the part that matters most. At our homes, and with most rental vendors, the driver must be at least 21 with a valid driver's license, with no exceptions for a licensed 17-year-old. Passengers are limited to the number of seat belts, children under five need a car seat, and no one drives after drinks. The full rules are in our Golf Cart & Bicycle Policy.

Bikes

Bikes are the everyday vehicle of 30A. Florida law requires helmets for riders under 16, and we recommend them for everyone. Ride with traffic where you share the road, use a front light and rear light after dark, keep one rider per seat, and lock the bike whenever it is out of sight. On the trail, call out when passing and yield to walkers. Many homes provide bikes; rental shops in most towns deliver to your door if yours does not.

Parking, Beach Access, and Town Centers

Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and Alys Beach have small, popular town centers with limited parking that fills by late morning in season. A cart or bike removes that problem entirely. Public beach access points are spaced along 30A with small lots; a cart with a beach-gear rack is the local way to reach them. Some communities have private beach access for their guests, reached by cart or foot.

Where Guests Get Caught

• Renting a cart into a community that does not allow them. A few 30A communities prohibit carts entirely. Check the home's community rules before you rent, or ask us.
• Letting a teenager drive. It is the fastest way to lose cart privileges for the whole week, and it is illegal.
• Taking a standard golf cart onto 30A. Only street-legal LSVs belong on the road.
• Riding the beach. Carts and bikes are not allowed on the sand or the dunes, and the fines are real.
• Leaving the cart uncharged. Most carts are electric and need to be plugged in each night.

What This Means for Your Trip
